Just yesterday my eight year old asked me when he was going to be allowed to have a cell phone, I’m surprised he couldn’t hear my screams from inside my head. I honestly don’t even want to go there yet for a number of reasons, but I know all too well that the need for a mobile device will be here before I know it and coming up with appropriate guidelines, rules and affective communication with him is going to be key. My husband and I have yet to decide when the appropriate time will be when he actually needs a cell phone, but I’ve been surprised by some of the recent research I have read. Did you know that ..
In a recent U.S. Cellular survey, respondents indicated that 13 was an appropriate age for a child to receive their first mobile phone, whereas five years ago this age was 15. [Between Nov. 15 and De. 2, 2013, 500 nationally representative online interviews were conducted among smartphone user in partnership with Maritz research.]
I know as an adult I struggle finding that balance of the mobile device use and the thought of a child at young ages makes me nervous. That’s why as a parent that’s already planning ahead I’m glad for the Parent-Child Agreement U.S. Cellular developed, which allows parents and children to come up with guidelines they both can easily agree too, not only giving parents more of a peace-of-mind of their children’s mobile device usage, but children know what’s expected and it’s always easier when things are all laid out in front of you. U.S. Cellular also recommends that you Establish Guidelines at the beginning, Set up your Child’s phone so they only have access to phone features and apps that are appropriate & Monitor Usage. The U.S Cellular Family Protector App, can help with these tips and visiting one of the Device workshops in your area that helps with the Parent-Child Agreement. You can read a previous U.S. Cellular Parent-Child Agreement post that I highlighted more features of the agreement if you’d like more information.
If it’s time for your child to get a mobile device, to help enable better moments within your family then take advantage of the workshops U.S. Cellular has developed to help you. I for one, know my husband and I will be taking part. When thinking about a mobile device for your child, U.S. Cellular has cutting-edge devices like the iPhone 5s (which I love) and even the Samsung Galaxy S5 with their reliable 4G LTE network with speeds of up to 10 times faster than 3G. You can’t go wrong with their great products, customer service and now their Parents-Child Agreement which will help you manage your child’s cell phone use!
